Tetovo, Macedonia, March 24-25 2001: Bloody Weekend

Saturday.
(March 24, 2001)

It was a bad day for Tetovo. Three KLA grenades fell in the area of Koltuk, right in the homes of some of the people living there. More than 20 people were injured, including a few policemen, and one old lady that was hiding in her house. The shrapnel got her in the hip. Other than that, it was a "usual" day for Tetovo. Shootings and snipers, people as training targets for the KLA bandits up on the hills. Meanwhile, some journalists had raised some money over the weekend to help an old lady, 'Baba Ratka' is her name. They had found a place for her in Skopje and they were there to move her out of Tetovo.

Sunday, bloody Sunday.
(March 25, 2001)

The day woke us up, with information that the Macedonian forces had already started the offensive move towards the hills above Tetovo. Four of us rushed to the site. We were to take Ratka to Skopje until the situation in Tetovo was to calm down. But she didn't want to leave. Then the situation changed. The KLA bandits lost control and started shooting at everything that moved. Joka and Carol who were down the street from us were getting some food and supplies for the old lady, from the money that we had raised the previous day, were being shot at. The bullets hit the street between them. They couldn't get into KISS TV station (a sort of a press center in those days), although they were just 20m from the place. Bullets were flying like crazy hitting nearby houses and fences. One policeman got shot. KLA also put bullets through the ambulance that came. Snipers were having a fun day.
At around 5 pm, we still could not leave KISS TV. It was too dangerous. A grenade exploded 30m away, spreading deadly shrapnel around. Sometime later we managed to jump in the cars and drive away. Needless to say, the night was very uncertain.

It is forbidden to use the materials from this site in ways that promote hatred, racism, or ethnic hostilities, especially in ways that implicate, hint, or openly blame all Albanians for the consequences of the murderous acts committed by the terrorist KLA/UCK. We understand that only small percent of Macedonian Albanians support KLA in its self-destructing quest for the old fascist construct, Great Albania, and even fewer do so voluntarily. Most of Albanians involved in the hostilities are pushed into them by way of forced mobilization or are misguided by continuos brainwashing. Macedonia has always been a multiethnic entity, where different cultures and religions lived side by side. This diversity is the foundation of its beauty and strength. Please help the Police and the Army of Republic of Macedonia protect its diversity, democratic values, and the lives of innocent people threatened by the KLA terrorists by continuing the Macedonian tradition of tolerance. Please do not vent your frustration, anger, and pain on your neighbors just because they speak the same language as the KLA criminals. Ordinary citizens of Macedonia belonging to all its ethnic groups (Macedonians, Albanians, Vlachs, Turks, Rroma, Serbs, Bosnians, and others) all share the same problems, same joys, just like they share the same sun and stomp the same ground. They have been living and working together for ages, and will continue to do so as soon as the supporters of KLA and all who promote violence are moved from the scene and put into jail, where they belong.
